Adult Cardioanaesthesia and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

In six operating rooms, two of which are hybrid suites, and in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), the adult cardiac anesthesiology team cares for patients undergoing procedures across the entire spectrum of adult cardiothoracic and vascular surgery as well as interventional cardiology. In addition, we staff both operating rooms at Paulinenkrankenhaus.

Our range of services includes:

  • General anesthesia including total intravenous (TIVA) and balanced anesthesia techniques
  • Procedural sedation
  • Stand-by support for high-risk interventions
  • Advanced hemodynamic monitoring
  • Management of temporary and definite implanted pacing devices (CIEDs)
  • EEG-based depth of anesthesia monitoring
  • Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
  • Perioperative coagulation diagnostics (ACT, HepCon HMS, ROTEM, MultiPlate)
  • One lung ventilation
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Nitric Oxide Inhalation
  • Extracorporeal cardiac and respiratory support (ECLS / ECMO, Impella, IABP)
  • Intraoperative neuromonitoring (NIRS, evoked potentials, lumbar CSF drainage and monitoring)
  • Temperature management

The post anesthesia care unit (PACU) provides immediate postoperative care for selected patients on six fully equipped ICU beds. Our specific focus here is the fast-track, enhanced recovery protocol which aims to minimize the duration of ventilation following cardiac surgery. We also offer a range of services for patients on the general floor including transesophageal echocardiography examinations, central venous catheterization and direct current cardioversions under sedation.
