It doesn't matter whether you are still in training and completing a practical placement at the DHZB, whether you start working for us as a health and nursing nurse after passing your exam, or whether you join our team as an experienced nurse: We want to make your training and familiarization as pleasant and effective as possible.

No, we don't want to promise you the blue sky here: We also have emergencies and personnel bottlenecks, so that in individual cases there is less time left than planned for intensive support of trainees or job starters.

But nobody is thrown into the deep end here. Because we know: Cardiac medicine at the highest level needs top care. They are the future of care at the DHZB. And that's why we take your training and induction very, very seriously - even if we like to be happy!

The training

1. Nursing school

The German Heart Centre Berlin has its own nursing school, officially: training and further education centre for nursing professions. The first exams were taken here in 1995. The school is not far from the DHZB.
You can find further information here.

2. Practical assignments at the DHZB

The DHZB is a specialist hospital in the fields of cardiac surgery, cardiology, paediatrics and functional care with regard to nursing training.

During the three years of training, 3-4 practical assignments are possible at the DHZB:

Each student is assigned to a permanent member of our staff, usually from the team of our practice instructors. In an initial discussion, the level of knowledge and learning goals are discussed together. At "half time" there is an intermediate discussion: Is the trainee on the right track and satisfied? What can get better? At the final interview, the internship is then assessed together.

Especially in the intensive area, regular and numerous practical exercises are carried out. Pupils have to do theoretical preparatory work, which is then discussed in detail and put into practice right next to the bed.

"Make, make, make": Of course, our trainees are employed in the duty roster in addition to and not instead of the certified nursing staff. But we want you to be able to work as much as possible and as independently as possible as quickly as possible. Of course, an instructor will always be at your side with help and advice.

The induction

The first days at the DHZB: Welcome to the team! We will introduce you to our company and its departments. Our IT specialists will train you extensively in our IT systems and instruct you in the various regulations, such as hygiene, data protection and occupational safety.

For each ward, we have written a detailed induction concept for you and a detailed induction manual: rules and procedures, clinical pictures, equipment, medication, and, and, and: An indispensable guide in (almost) every professional situation!

Depending on the area, the training with us takes 3 to 7 weeks. If necessary, also longer. Because we want you to feel really safe at the end of the training period.

At the beginning of each induction phase there will be an initial interview with the practice instructor(s) responsible for you to assess your previous knowledge and personal strengths. At least halfway through the induction period and at the end of it, further detailed discussions are due. Of course, this is only the official part, which is also recorded. After all, you talk to your practice instructors almost every day!

New colleagues on our peripheral care wards have the opportunity to spend a day in the operating theatre or cardiac catheter function service to gain a better understanding of the procedures in these areas.

In the intensive care area you will be specially trained by our specialists in respiratory therapy and wound management.

Respect - yes. Fear - no! Training on the intensive care unit for children

We have been able to recruit a very experienced intensive care nurse for children as a nursing lecturer for this area. In this video Michael introduces himself and his work.

A few days of young infants with severe congenital heart defects, immediately after many hours of highly complex heart surgery: Pediatric intensive care at the DHZB in one of the world's leading children's heart centers sets the highest standards.

You are fascinated, but don't dare to take on this challenge as a beginner?

We understand that very well. For this reason, we have developed an induction concept especially for the area of intensive child care that introduces graduates of the nursing school to this area individually, carefully and personally.

The concept has a modular structure, i.e. it comprises individual blocks of theory and practice that can be put together according to the previous knowledge of the new colleagues.

Training = Continuing education

Our practice instructor team

"With every induction of a new colleague, I also grow myself. Because what I want to explain well, I have to understand exactly. I have to keep questioning my views and putting my skills to the test."

This is how our practice instructors at the DHZB see it. And that's why they are proud and happy to carry out this task.
