Age Distribution of the Patients in 2015

Between 20 and 25 percent of our adult patients are admitted for an operation or an intervention. More than 50 percent of adult patients are treated as outpatients. This shows that adult patients with congenital heart defects need specialized interdisciplinary care.
As a certified supraregional center for the treatment of GUCH (grown-ups with congenital heart disease) we are an important element in the medical care of these often multimorbid patients.

Age Distribution of the Patients (1990-2015) in Percent

The figures reflect the trend towards patients with congenital heart defects being treated as outpatients from school age onwards. Before schooling starts, almost all heart defects have been operated upon, so that outpatient care is clearly in the foreground, except for occasionally necessary inpatient follow-up treatment. This applies to patients up to middle age. From the 40th year of life onwards, the frequency of problems in patients with congenital heart defects increases, especially in those who have a complex defect or who have been operated upon several times before.
