Fellowship

The Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine offers a two-year fellowship program. In addition to training in cardiac anesthesia and in intensive care medicine, the aim of the program is to support our fellow in acquiring expertise in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography.

Adult cardiac anesthesia is dedicated to the perioperative care of patients who undergo cardiac surgery, vascular and intrathoracic interventions as well as interventional and diagnostic cardiovascular procedures.

The majority of clinical training encapsulates the spectrum of perioperative medicine, namely: pre-assessment and optimization of patients, care of patients in the operating room and care in post-operative critical care areas including the PACU and the intensive care unit. At the German Heart Center Berlin, patients from the entire spectrum of adult and pediatric cardiac surgery receive perioperative care during the over 7.000 anesthetics undertaken each year. 44 adult intensive care beds are available and staffed 24/7 across two ICUs.
