The focus of our work in the

Department of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine

Adult Cardioanaesthesia and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

The adult cardioanaesthesia unit treats patients from the entire spectrum of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery as well as interventional cardiology in six operating theatres, two of which are hybrid operating theatres. In addition, the operating theatre area of the Paulinenkrankenhaus receives anaesthesiological care.

Paediatric cardioanaesthesia

In the area of paediatric cardioanaesthesia/anaesthesia for patients with congenital heart defects, patients of all ages from premature babies and neonates to adults receive anaesthesiological care in two operating theatres.

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE/TOE) is central to the activity of cardioanaesthesia. Not only is TEE the most comprehensive and useful tool for assessing cardiac and haemodynamic function in the operating theatre, cardioanaesthesia must use echocardiography above all to assist surgeons and interventionalists in planning the procedure and subsequently assessing the success of the surgical intervention.

Research/Cooperation partners

Our highly trained and experienced staff are innovators in a broad portfolio of research in cardiac anaesthesiology and critical care, from basic research to investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials and outcomes research.

In our eleven operating theatres at the Charité and the German Heart Centre, we operate "on the open heart". Our task is to accompany patients through this extremely critical process: While the heart is stopped for a few hours and the circulation is taken over by a machine, we ensure that the brain and other organs are optimally protected.

Operating-management and coordination

The operating theatre management (OPM) is responsible as interface coordination for the cooperation of the professional groups and functional units inside and outside the operating theatre area. The central focus is on the quality of the services provided and patient safety.
