Introducing our outpatient department
The outpatient department is often the first point of contact for patients and their parents who are suddenly confronted with the diagnosis of a congenital heart defect. Naturally, those affected have a large number of questions that need to be answered. We are here both to guarantee optimal medical treatment and to respond to the personal concerns of our patients and their families.
In addition to the medical treatment required, patients are often faced with issues concerning schooling, their choice of profession and the decision whether or not to have children. For these reasons, an important focus of our department is on the care of teenagers and adults with congenital heart disease.
Procedures that can be performed in outpatients:
- transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, 3-D echocardiography, tissue Doppler
- ECG
- long-term ECG
- ergospirometry (exercise testing) (possible from body height of 1m 20 cm)
- lung function testing
- long-term blood pressure monitoring
- blood tests, drug dose monitoring
Special hours of consultation for:
- pacemaker testing (2-chamber, 3-chamber, AICD)
- Marfan syndrome
- post-transplantation pediatric care
- pulmonary hypertension
- fetal echocardiography
What to expect at an out-patient appointment:
First of all the patient is registered at our reception desk and his or her data are entered into our computer system. Then the patient’s height, weight and blood pressure are measured, and an electrocardiogram (ECG) reading is taken. Next a doctor carries out a physical examination and echocardiography. At the end there will be a detailed talk with the doctor.
We aim to keep waiting times short and to make the examination as pleasant as possible for the children. They are able to listen to music or watch a film during the examination.
