The Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin was opened in 1986, at a time when the capacity for cardiovascular surgery in Germany was inadequate. Under the chairmanship of the heart surgeon Professor Roland Hetzer the institution quickly achieved international importance as a center for the treatment of cardiac, thoracic and vascular diseases.

The department is responsible for the entire area of internal medicine, and focuses on the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Since it was founded in 1988, the Department of Congenital Heart Disease / Pediatric Cardiology has treated patients of all ages with congenital heart problems. The department works in close collaboration with the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and the Department of Anesthesiology. Our patients come from all over Germany and from abroad.

No major surgical intervention is possible without anesthesia. Thus, this area of medical specialization is particularly closely connected - in fact it is almost symbiotic - with surgery and the constantly broadening spectrum of modern operative procedures. Contemporary anesthesiology demands know-how that is in step with up-to-the-minute findings in the field.

The individual with his or her health problems and social, cultural and psychological expectations is the focus of our work.

The Medical Care Unit (Medizinsches Versorgungszentrum) of the DHZB consists of specialist doctors’ practices that provide treatment in the sector or cardiovascular diseases for outpatients with statutory and private health insurance. The physicians of the Medical Care Unit work in close cooperation with the other specialist outpatient departments of the DHZB.

People with diagnosed or suspected Marfan syndrome or another congenital disease of the aorta may make an appointment for a consultation at our Center. Usually patients are referred to us by their general practitioners or by other hospitals. Others come because they themselves suspect that they may have Marfan syndrome.
Our first aim is to establish whether the patient does have Marfan syndrome or another disease.
