The tasks of the Society are:
- Supporting young, talented doctors by enabling training at the leading heart surgery hospitals and research institutions of the world
- Facilitating research, for example on a total implantable artificial heart device, the early recognition and treatment of rejection reactions after organ transplantation, coronary artery disease and tissue engineering
- Publishing outstanding work by DHZB scientists
- Organizing and supporting further training for doctors, nurses and personnel from the Academy for Perfusion
- Holding lectures and courses to provide advice for patients, relatives and the interested public.
The Society of Friends supported the inceptionof the Academy for Perfusion at the DHZB, which has since developed into a state-recognized training institute. Young researchers have been able to take up fellowships at other renowned institutions and publish their work, thus documenting for scientific audiences the intensive research work of the DHZB. Further, a number of research projects have received financial support. Through a variety of activities the Society acquires new members and maintains contact with its membership.
The Society works hand-in-hand with the DHZB to promote the success of its medical work, to which thousands of former patients, children and adults, owe their lives.
